William Hugh Alan Cooper (known as Alan;〔(Past Rectors & Vicars of the Parish of Ashtead )〕 2 June 1909 – 14 October 1999) was an eminent Anglican bishop whose ecclesiastical career spanned forty eight years 〔“Who was Who” 1897-2007 London, A & C Black, 2007 ISBN 978-0-19-954087-7〕 in the twentieth century. Educated at King's College School and Christ's College, Cambridge and ordained in 1932,〔''Crockford's Clerical Directory 1975-76'' London: Oxford University Press, 1976 ISBN 0-19-200008-X〕 he began his career with curacies at St Margaret, Blackheath 〔(Photo of church )〕 and Holy Trinity, Cambridge.〔(Church web-site )〕 He was a CMS Missionary in Lagos and then held incumbencies at St Giles, Ashtead〔(On-line list of rectors )〕 and of St Andrew, Plymouth before becoming Provost of Bradford, a post he held from 1962〔The Times, Saturday, Mar 31, 1962; pg. 10; Issue 55354; col G ''Provost Of Bradford''〕 to 1977.
